Their real advantages come from their slim profile however. As well as weighing less than a normal valve, reducing rotating unsprung mass, the fact that they are imbedded into the rim makes them virtually impervious to damage even under heavy contact. All too often, bendy rubber valves can be torn from race rims when ‘swapping paint’ with other racers, running over kerbs or passing close to circuit walls. Rapid deflation usually ensues and it can mean the end of an otherwise promising race at best –and an ‘off’ at worst! On off-road vehicles, the valves are protected when running in deep ruts, or close to large rocks and obstacles.
